This guide was made for the following emulators:
  • RMG (recommended)
  • Project 64 (I recommend the Luna fork as it removes the nagware and adds a few enhancements)
Some information:

  • Required rom for the 60 fps code: Castlevania (U) (V1.0) [!]
  • Killing the biker skeletons in the Castle Center crashes the game sometimes. Be sure to use stave states in this part to avoid frustation.
  • Carrie's recolor pack was made for the original Castlevania 64 only

Open the Castlevania rom first before you begin configuring things.
Restart the emulator after applying changes from this guide.

General enhancements

In the video tab:
  • Aspect Ratio -> Try to adjust 4:3 game to fit (for widescreen)
  • Tick Overscan -> NTSC -> put 4 in all fields (removes black bars in the corners)
  • Enable VSync (removes screen tearing)

Tweak Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic filtering to your liking.
N64-style 3 point is the more faithful one but also heavier on resources.

60 fps code
  1. Go to System -> Cheats
  2. Click Add
  3. Enter a name (eg: 60 fps)
  4. Paste this in the code section: 800A10C2 000D
  5. Click Okay and close the cheat window
  6. Go to Settings -> Game -> Counter Factor -> Set to 1
  7. Close and re-open the emulator

Optional Carrie recolor

This texture pack change Carrie's color to match one of her concept arts.

  1. Download the texture pack attached in this post
  2. Go to the hires_texture folder inside RMG folder
    In Windows, path is: %appdata%\RMG\Data\hires_texture
  3. Extract CASTLEVANIA.zip inside that folder. Should be in this format: hires_texture/CASTLEVANIA/[texture files]
  4. In the emulator, go to Settings -> Graphics -> Texture enhancement
  5. Mark "Use Texture Pack" and "Use Full Transparencies"

I wish you and my other modding friend would meet. You two would get along and learn from each other.

Granted, I'm the local Castlevania 64 maniac so it's unlikely that you feel the same way that I do, but it's a game worth giving a chance at the very least. It doesn't deserve its bad reputation.
i recently got a Everdrive for my 64, ill try the game today and ill post what my initial thoughts are on it.
