What was last movie you watched mine was Land of the Dead

Watched Akira with my best mate the other day; his was a second watch because he wanted to see if his initial opinions about the movie had changed. We were both blown away by the insanely detailed animation of the film, especially the background frames. I'd go as far as to say that it's the best depiction of a decaying city I've ever seen in an anime: busy, cluttered, dirty, gloomy but punctuated by harsh lighting, and scarred with graffiti and damage spurred by neglect.

That said, neither of us had any idea what the hell was going on plot-wise. I agree that the film is art but it is NOT because of the narrative.

My friend who hadn't watched an anime in his entire life was also completely blown away by Akira when we watched it with him. Real cool to see the power of that flick in action like that.

It's actually a really abridged and rewritten version of the original story from the manga, which is why a lot of the plot feels weird and kind of rushed, but also because the manga is gigantic and more or less impossible to completely convert to screen. The manga makes you a thousand times more invested in the actual world and all the weird faction wars going on, and many of the characters are much more fleshed out, but the movie is such a captivating thing on its own that they just kind of peacefully co-exist.

That would explain why the movie introduces so many concepts and never explains any of them. I looked up the Wikipedia page for the movie and there is so much information there that was clearly taken from the manga. It doesn't take away from the stunning animation but it can be distracting when you've been told it's "the best anime movie of all time" and you're struggling to understand why the elderly smurf children are trying to gank a dude.

Yeah totally.
The creator of both the manga and the film, Katsuhiro Otomo, famously left the premiere of the movie because he was so disappointed he couldn't fit the whole story (and had to rewrite so much of it) and believed the film to be a failure.

For a pretty big example of how it's very different aside from just being abridged, in the manga Akira is an actual person and not a bunch of vials.
(Hopefully that spoiler tag works correctly...)

So I was tricked into watching Joshua and the Promised Land, apparently it's @Ruky's favorite movie? I'd give it 3 "Abducted Children Coerced Into Slaughtering The Enemies of The Chosen People" out of 5.
