yeah let's talk about the old hag. So she was just a dirty, manipulative, selfish & evil witch huh. And when things started going sideways for her she just wanted to run away & leave town. Wow, what an absolute coward... but I like that lol. She was just truly evil.

Also trying to figure how near the end when the boy rang the bell, why it sent out the command for the kids to kill the witch. Like, I understand that she became the target of the command (the wig) but not sure why the kids became the weapon. What a strange movie this one.

Sooooo I've watched a bunch of movies in the last few days, here's some of them!

D-Railed (2018)​

Phrases like "a hat on a hat on a hat" or "Fortnite-ification" have been used the last few years to describe the common recent trend of "What if X but add other genre?" A good genre mash-up can be a delight - horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead come to mind - but more often than not it comes off like characters from one setting *cosplaying* like they're in another.

So anyways, D-Railed is a *deep breath* LARP murder mystery on a train that quickly turns into an actual crime that causes the train to crash in a lake where it becomes a creature feature as the bastard child of the Demogorgon and the Creature from the Black Lagoon starts picking off the survivors and also it's a ghost movie with a sub-Shyamalan twist. (That last part is a bit of a spoiler but please, don't watch this movie).

Alllll of that sounded so novel that I was eager to watch it, and boy, was I stupid for that. It does none of the things listed above well, with the sole exception of a surprisingly scary creature design. (A nanny wades into the water and nearly beats the thing's ass singlehandedly though, he ain't shit). The best thing I can say is that it's so weird that I wanted to finish it JUST to see if they explained anything.

....no. No, they did not.

Beyond the Seventh Door (1987)​

Sometimes, just because you Have a good idea, doesn't mean you're qualified to Make it.

Beyond the Seventh Door is a Canadian exploitation film - canuckspoilation! - filmed primarily at Casa Loma castle in Toronto. (No, I didn't know that Canada had castles either). Newly paroled thief Boris meets up with his old girlfriend Wendy to rob her new rich lover, the wheelchair-bound owner of said castle. Turns out, in his spare time he devises Ridder-esque death traps for burglars, to uh....teach them a moral lesson? So like, the Saw series, if Jigsaw cared less about the health care system and more about castle doctrine and the estate tax. (Also cuckoldry, but I'm getting ahead of myself!)

That sounds kinda fun, right? A couple of crooks solving lethal puzzle rooms to rob an eccentric madman, what's not to like? WELL, let me tell ya. First off, they just didn't have a budget; second, they didn't write dialouge worth listening to; third, and most importantly, they cast Lazar Rockwood as the lead. This guy is a Yugoslavian actor who looks utterly unique; like no other man alive has ever looked like this guy. His English is terrible, his acting is inscrutable, and somehow the director wrote the part with him in mind. There's even a sex scene where he doesn't seduce so much as cram his face in her crotch until she goes with it.

...and I know that sounds bad, buuuut here's the twist; the seventh door is a small room with a million dollars in a briefcase. Either take the money, or, "simply walk out as an honest man" and "find a treasure that is far more valuable." Rockwood takes the money, which of course is a trap and explodes. We find out that the "treasure" is actually Wendy in her bed, and this is all a kinky test for someone to fuck the rich guy's girlfriend and be trusted not to rob him. (She's an eager participant in all this, though she's chastised for sleeping with every guy they bring!)

So fucking weird, but a better made movie might have sold the sleazy ending. A lead with actual charisma wouldn't have hurt either.

Haunt (2019)​

Here's one from the writers of The Quiet Place, proving that, you know, they can't all be hits. Compared to the previous two movies, this has production value, a competent direction, and a few decent kills and scares. It's also, just, terribly uninteresting.

"The haunted house....is REAL!" That's it, that's the whole thing. It's a movie aspiring to be grindhouse that winds up more teahouse, things have neat explanations and it's generally not as mean-spirited or cynical as the movies it's emulating. There's a...."twist", I guess you could call it, but I'm not actually sure what the point is. The acting is *fine*, but nothing special. Between all that and the generic title, it's gonna be hard to remember this one.



....and also Three Outlaw Samurai (1964), Cheerleader Camp (1988), Lady Terminator (1988), Playing for Keeps (1986), and Smarty (1934).

In order, Good Chambara film, generic 80's camp slasher with more titties than thrills, a movie that I can't talk about without saying the phrase "Pussy snake" a LOT, an unspeakably bad comedy with a very young Marisa Tomei, and a movie that seems to be in love with spousal abuse.

i remember saying this on august 7th when I was 19. I’d give it a 8 or 7.

Haunt (2019)

I’m not great with clown stuff so this genuinely haunted me.

Three Outlaw Samurai (1964), Cheerleader Camp (1988), Lady Terminator (1988), Playing for Keeps (1986), and Smarty (1934).

I knew a smartass lady who kept playing with me saying i should watch another terminator movie or I wouldn’t deserve to rent three outlet samurai so I eventually camped in.

I watched Blade Runner 2049 and The Punisher (1989), enjoyed both of them a lot at i'm looking to watch more films with Dolph Lundgren, Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas.

it was a ride; a bad one. it is insane trying to watch and understand what is going on. he seems coherent in interviews, but writes like a six year. i saw a comment on the video that in the, i think it was the r rated version, that when they show the ship crew fueling up the ship's engine, instead of using coal, they were shoveling human bones and skulls into it.
there is so much nonsensical bullshit in each of his movies it makes you wonder how he ever got a job in the first place.

The only thing I remember about Wreck it Ralph is that Sonic appears in the beginning to say 1 sentence & that's it. Oh, and maybe the mario kart battle (or chase?) that happens near the end. I've only watched it once but... the movie never gave me the incentive to watch it again.
The theme may have been video games but for me it never really felt like a video game movie. Just an alright animated flick. I'm not being harsh, I swear!

Well, you're not wrong. In a certain sense, it is the movie that came the closest to having videogames as a thematic, but unfortunately that ain't saying much. Not because of the lack of existing characters (seriously, that marketing clickbait was cruel), or because of the premise, but the movie itself just isn't that videogame coded. The characters and the environment don't really behave like a videogame except on a superficial level most of the time.

That scene with a drunk soldier walking right into the wall, colliding with it yet having his walking cycle still going? It needed more of that. But it's a good movie in its own right.

the movie HIM also just came out the other week and i really need to see that too. i also have four other movies lined up for this October:
