Sometimes to get out of a rut of reading the same old stuff or want to pick a book that my biases would keep me from reading I pick up a book by title (I do check genres but try to avoid my usual fare) no reviews or blurbs, and read the first chapter or an hour of my time. Last one I tried was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and I have to explain I'm not in the know with modern book titles. I've seen romantasy clog up my basic fantasy recommendations to know how to avoid them but other than those the rest of the literary space is dead to me. Until recently my most modern books were non-fiction so I was ready to try something modernly written that wasn't anthology and I just dropped it, couldn't get past the hour mark. I could also mention another title but apparently the man was well known to lure in people with the idea of a pulpy horror and then it becomes an explosion of explicit sexual violence that comes out of nowhere, so he was menace in his space.
